Please note that the purpose of this video is not to make fun of the Japanese accent, but to realize the differences to effectively learn or teach pronunciation

なお、このビデオの目的は、日本人のアクセントをバカにすることではなく、効果的に発音を学んだり教えたりするために、その違いに気づくことです。

First, I'd like to explain why the English language is difficult for Japanese speakers, and vice-versa. 

まず、なぜ日本語を話す人にとって英語が難しいのか、逆に英語を話す人にとって英語が難しいのかを説明したいと思います。

According to the Foreign Service Institute (FSI) of the United States Federal Government, the English and Japanese languages are considered as "Category Five" with each other, meaning the English language is one of the most difficult languages to learn for Japanese speakers, and vice-versa.   

米国連邦政府のForeign Service Institute（FSI）によると、英語と日本語は「カテゴリー5」とされており、日本語話者にとって英語は最も習得が難しい言語の一つであり、その逆もまた然りです。

This is due to the non-significance between the two languages like vocabulary, grammar, and of course, pronunciation. Having that said, here are the difficult English sounds for Japanese.

これは、語彙や文法、そしてもちろん発音など、2つの言語の間に重要性がないためです。とはいえ、日本人にとって難しい英語の音は以下の通りです。

The 11 vowel positions

11の母音の位置

In the Japanese language, there are only five vowel sounds - あ, い, う, え、お,　Notice all of them are short vowels. Whereas in the English language, particularly American, there are 11 monophthongs or single vowel sounds.

日本語の母音は、「あ」「い」「う」「え」「お」の5つしかなく、そのすべてが短母音であることに気づく。一方、英語（特にアメリカ）には、11種類の単母音があります。

The Schwa Sound

シュワの音

The schwa sound "ə" is non-existent in the Japanese language so this sound is usually replaced with ’あ／ア’ or any consonant sounds like - ば、さ、か、た、and so on. 

日本語にはシュワの音「ə」が存在しないため、この音は通常「ア／ア」や子音の「- ば、さ、か、た、」などに置き換えられます。

It's important to know that the schwa sound - 'ə' is used all the time in all types of English, may it be British, American, Australian, and others. And this sound is used in most "non-stressed syllables".

イギリス英語、アメリカ英語、オーストラリア英語など、あらゆる英語でシュワの音「ə」が常に使われていることを知っておきましょう。そしてこの音は、ほとんどの「非ストレス音節」で使われています。

Examples: "away, a boy, the girl, pronunciation, You and I, I'm going to work."

例を挙げると"away, a boy, the girl, pronunciation, You and I, I'm going to work"

The ER sound

These are words typically spelled with 'ir', 'er', 'ur', 'or', 'ar', or 'ear'. 

For the American accent, this has a slight "r" sound at the end. For the British accent, this would sound like a long schwa sound. 

これらは、一般的に「ir」、「er」、「ur」、「or」、「ar」、「ear」で綴られる単語です。 アメリカのアクセントでは、これは最後にわずかな「r」の音があります。イギリスのアクセントでは、これは長いシュワの音のように聞こえます。

For the Japanese accent, this would sound similar to the British but with a wider mouth position. (a)

Consonant Endings

子音の語尾

In the English language, the vowel and consonant sounds are naturally separated. However, in the Japanese accent, the consonants are always paired with vowel sounds that's why it creates an extra syllable.  

"cake, laptop, McDonald's"

英語では、母音と子音は自然に分かれています。しかし、日本語のアクセントでは、子音は常に母音とペアになっているので、余分な音節ができてしまうのです。 "cake, laptop, McDonald's"

The V and F sound

VとFの音

The V and the F sounds have similar positions where the upper teeth are placed on the lower lip. Japanese accent tends to replace the V with a B sound, like - elevator, versus. Also, the F sound is replaced with a modified H sound if it's followed by an I or U sound.
